About the project

The closure of the lynx carcass submission project in 2016, resulted in a loss of information about our predator populations. In order to compensate for this, we intend to collect lynx observations by way of citizen scientists!

Carcass data was used to infer lynx:
  • Population dynamics
  • Abundance
  • Age distributions
  • Movements
  • Habitat associations
This information was used to inform: land management, hunt/trapping quotas, conservation, and research

Goals

  • Act as a replacement project in lieu of the lynx carcass program closure
  • Engage with the general public, outdoorsmen, hunters and trappers, and citizen scientists
  • Strengthen our understanding of their distribution and habitat associations

Objectives

  • Educate participants and the general public about lynx conservation
  • Encourage participation through newsletters and through provincial, local, and social media campaigns
  • Collect, manage, and explore lynx sighting data
