Visual Obsevation
The lynx has a short tail, long legs, wide feet, and prominent ear tufts
Winter coat = light gray, possibly mottled with longer hairs; the hairs underneath are brownish and the ear tufts and tail tips are black
The tail is short (4 to 5")
Summer coat = shorter hair than the winter coat, and has a reddish brown cast
Lynx resembles a very large house cat
Track Observation
Usually walk in an alternating pattern
Rarely dragging their feet or body
In deep snow the hind legs sink, distinguished by a 'handle' print in the snow
Lynx straddle is generally small
Foot pads are usually obscured by dense hair
The foot pad is approximately 1/2 of the entire print
Tracks do not sink more than 8" into the snow
Claw marks are usually absent
Scat Observation
Usually constricted
If dry, will separate at constricted segments and fall apart easily
Ends are usually blunt
Scat from a recent kill tend to have a uniform diameter
